• Avery married young, at the age of 19. He married his high school sweetheart Michelle, and they ended up having their first son the year they were married. Their middle son, Thomas, was born just about a year after his brother. In total, Avery and Michelle are the proud parents of three boys, their baby being William, who turns 19 this year.
• Michelle and Avery have also in a sense taken their sons significant others as daughters they never had. Lana McLeary Sloan and Andrea Townsend have become such a solid part of the Sloan family and Avery and his wife would have it no other way.
• From a very early age, Avery knew he wanted to help people. He wanted to impact the lives of others in a positive mannerism. Always a very driven individual, he graduated from West Chester East in 1984, and furthered his education at the University of Pennsylvania. Originally, Avery wanted to be a doctor, and actually pursued a education in medication. His plans took a slight change however, and he wanted to be an educator as well. Knowing that this would be a difficult task to balance with being a father of growing boys, he continued his education while spending as much time with his children as he could.
• Through a lot of hard work and discipline, Avery completed his medical degree. He worked at Chester County Hospital in the Emergency Department for a number of years, going from an intern during his collegic career to a resident. While maintaining his residency at Chester County Hospital, Avery continued his education even then, wanting to be able to teach and educate.
• Right into his 30s, he continued schooling where he finally graduated with a bachelor's in medical science.
• Education, as you can tell, is incredibly important to Avery. He's tried to instill this importance into his three sons, and so far - to his knowledge - has succeeded in showing them the importance of it.
• When Avery was 38, he was offered a position to teach in London, England at St. George's University of London, where he spent four years teaching. It was a great opportunity for him to do something he had always wanted to do and it would be a learning experience for himself as well. This however resulted in Avery moving his wife and his youngest son, William, to England for nearly four years. He taught at St George's University of London for that period of time, and while he thoroughly enjoyed the environment, the students and the job, being so far from what he called home was difficult for him. And he also knew it was difficult for his boy. So Avery made the decision that moving back to Pennsylvania was a good idea. This came into fruition right before William's 18th birthday.
• Since returning from England, Avery has joined up with West Chester University and is on the pre-med committee. As part of the pre-med committee, he spends a good amount of time lecturing in an area he's very familiar with, organic science, as well as teaching courses when he's asked to come in as a special guest speaker. He's lectured his son Tommy's courses a number of times. He also, on occasion, teaches at West Chester East High School and various high schools in the area. He often lends a hand and expertise in the science department, often stepping in, doing lectures and projects alike, when studying the human body and the inner workings of it. Avery also has returned to Chester County Hospital working as a resident and on-call specialist.
• Aside from his work, which Avery loves, he enjoys spending time with his family. Family is a very important thing to him and he often will take the time away from work just to enjoy some quality time with them. He didn't have the chance to really do that before so now he takes full advantage of it. With random ski trips, to just throwing a ball around or having a barbecue with his family, these simple pleasures are something Avery doesn't take for granted.
• Is a very laid back, generally happy individual. He believes laughter is indeed the best medicine and tries to make others laugh and smile at any cost really. He does this a lot especially when he works at Chester County Hospital. But generally in life as a whole he treats people with respect, he's an over all really good person, and is usually smiling. That's just how he is.
• He occasionally changes up his style. Be it changing his hair color, growing out facial hair, growing out his hair, he just is always trying to keep things fresh and new. Despite being in his early 40s he likes keeping a sort of youthful glow, so to speak, as he ages. Or at least try to!
• There's plenty to know, though, so get to know him.
